Job Summary:

This job is responsible for planning, directing, developing, maintaining, and evaluating strategic and tactical internal and external communication plans and programs for CHI Franciscan Health (Pacific Northwest Division) to engage specific audiences (e.g. leaders, managers, employees, mass media, trade media, community leaders, and/or the public) with the organization's mission, vision, strategic plan, services, and initiatives.  Activities include directing communication efforts in support of strategic business objectives and in accordance with the standards of the marketing and communication profession.  An incumbent drives division-wide communications through a variety of channels, e.g. executive announcements, publications, meetings, public forums, intranet, internet, mass media, trade media, digital media, talking points, presentations, etc. to ensure greater engagement. For internal audiences, communications will focus to ensure consistency and facilitate system integration, productivity, and execution of CHI Franciscan’s goals.  Under the direction of the Vice President, Marketing & Communications, an incumbent partners directly with senior leaders to develop and implement annual internal and external communications plans as well as program and initiative specific plans that identify goals, measurable objectives and metrics, budgets, and key messages.

 

Essential Duties:

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

*  Oversees and directs the creation, implementation, and management of external communication plans and strategies that reflect CHI Franciscan’s strategic vision;

*  Manages relationships with CHI-FH’s public relations agencies; oversees the periodic preparation of news and media coverage reports.

*  Applies strategic knowledge and creative expertise to grow and sustain regional relationships while developing tactics that support goals and objectives of the regional health care organization.

*  Directs the development and implementation of media relations strategies/tactics to support significant marketing initiatives; serves as CHI Franciscan spokesperson, or may prepare other spokespersons, as necessary.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

*  Partners with senior leaders to develop and implement an annual strategic message agenda and internal communication plan designed to facilitate the effective flow of information to management and targeted employee audiences; participates in system leadership meetings to provide input from a communications perspective. 

*  Assesses overall communication needs and collaborates with key internal functions (e.g. Human Resources, Quality, Clinical, etc.) to integrate their initiatives and messages into the annual plan.

STAFF MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

*  Maintains communications staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees, providing on-the-job training as necessary, and developing personal growth opportunities.

*  Plans, manages, and evaluates the work of professional staff in compliance with human resource management policies and procedures; ensures adequate staffing levels, allocates resources; ensures that employees are qualified, trained and meet customer service standards; makes employment decisions and completes performance appraisals.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

*  Cultivates and maintains professional relationships with primary internal and external clients, vendors, senior leaders, and employees to foster opportunities for enhanced customer services and to influence business objectives positively. 

*  Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.

BUDGET AND RESOURCE ADMINISTRATION

*  Develops and administers annual budget for assigned function(s); identifies resources needed to accomplish performance objectives, exercises effective cost control to stay within budget; approves expenditures within defined scope of responsibility; identifies variances and develops action plan to address; negotiates and manages agreements with vendors to ensure smooth operation and consistent return on investment. 

*  Ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; monitors the effectiveness of current practices and procedures in producing desired results; keeps abreast of regulatory requirements, professional standards, and competitive industry practices, as well as organizational initiatives with potential to affect current strategies.

SHORT- AND LONG-TERM PLANNING

*  Develops strategic and tactical plans to include short- and long-term planning with accountability for achievement of plan objectives; develops and oversees programs and projects to develop and implement business objectives anticipating current and future needs.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT/QUALITY

*  Evaluates the effectiveness of plans and tactics, including conducting return-on-investment measurements whenever possible; ensures quality and accuracy of materials produced and compliance with corporate graphic and other standards.

*  Participates in the development/updating of policies/procedures; implements/evaluates new/revised policies/ procedures to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; ensures internal guidelines are documented and understood. 

Performs related duties as required.

 

 

 

Education/Work Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related discipline, and seven years of progressively responsible related work experience that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities, including five years in a leadership/management capacity. 
  • Master's degree in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field is strongly preferred.
