Job Summary:


This job is responsible for performing professional work focused on facilitating safe and quality care to patients, healthcare workers and visitors through the prevention and control of infections.  Infection control addresses factors related to the spread of infections within the healthcare setting, including prevention (via hand hygiene, cleaning/disinfection/sterilization, vaccination, surveillance), monitoring/investigation of demonstrated or suspected spread of infection within the assigned facility (surveillance and outbreak investigation) and management (interruption of outbreaks).  An incumbent applies epidemiological standards and methodologies to electronic surveillance activities to identify whether current practices comply with established prevention and control procedures (process surveillance) and to identify and report evidence of an infection (outcome surveillance).   

Essential Duties:
  • Conducts hospital-acquired infection/surgical site infection and epidemiologically-significant organism surveillance and epidemiologic investigations using electronic surveillance tools; collects, compiles and analyzes surveillance data and investigates outbreaks. 
  • Organizes and participates in team-based environmental surveillance rounds to identify positive findings and conditions out of compliance as they relates to infection prevention standards.  
  • Delivers training with respect to infection prevention/control issues, including follow-up action as appropriate.
  • Assists in completing Construction Infection Prevention Risk Assessments (ICRA);
  • Performs related duties as required.

Education/Work Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, medical technology program, or other healthcare related field, and four years of recent related healthcare work experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities.
  • OR
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, and four years of recent related work experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities.

Licensure/Certification
  • If eligible under #1 above:  Require National Registration as an MLS (ASCP) or Certification with the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Current licensure by the Washington State Board of Nursing preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CBIC) preferred
